Lansdale: Solar programs have arrived – The Reporter

LANSDALE – The latest proof that Lansdale is going green has arrived.

District Manager John Ernst announced last week that equipment for the district's long-planned solar power system was arriving in town.

"I am pleased to announce that this week after a really long time we started to deliver all parts and components for our solar project in the sewage treatment plant," said Ernst.

Since early 2018, the district has been discussing a project to install solar panel systems in the sewage treatment plant and electrical department complex on Ninth Street and a separate system in the district hall on Vine Street. The municipality applied for government grants for the project in February 2018, received those grants in April 2018, and by last summer, staff said the designs had been completed and would be put out to tender with a possible installation earlier this year. In March, employees announced that December contracts were awarded to two separate companies, BSI Inc. for the utility complex and Spotts Brothers Inc. for the Borough Hall project, at which point the borough estimated Borough Hall -Project would be completed by July and the urban complex by October 2020.

Ernst reported on the latest development on Wednesday evening, the equipment that has now been delivered to the urban complex. When activated, this will be the first locally generated public power since a neighborhood-operated power plant near Third Street and Richardson Avenue in the city shut down in the late 1960s. In a post Thursday, the electricity division announced that the community complex system will contain over 1,000 solar panels installed on 26 azimuth tracking setups that follow the sun across the sky.

"Construction and layout have started, various parts and accessories are popping up, and we look forward to this project laying the groundwork and making progress so that we can start drawing power on this project," said Ernst.
